Armada: Champagne

History

Champagne is the realization of a Gascogne-class battleship project with 406 mm main guns that were designed in France, but never built in the country.

Richelieu, one of the most successful battleships in the world, was built in the second half of the 1930s. As a further development of the ideas embodied in Richelieu, the French designed the Gascogne-class battleships with 380 mm guns. The original plan was to lay down three such ships in the second half of the 1940s, but the construction work never began.

The 406 mm/52 gun designed by the Schneider company was initially conceived for the Soviet Union as a part of the "Franco-Soviet Treaty of Mutual Assistance" signed in 1935, which entailed military and technical cooperation. While France never produced 406 mm guns, it was interested in developing them due to an emerging global trend towards increasing the caliber of battleships' main batteries. In the spring of 1938, the Schneider company handed the gun designs over to the Soviet Union, and that was the end of the story for the project.
